First time in Turkey prime minister Erdogan celebrates jewish religious holiday

Today is the last day of the Hanukkah. For the first time in Turkish history the Hanukkah candles are lit in Ortakoy square in front of the public.  At 6 pm on December 13th 2015, a great crowd  and the president of Turkey has met at the Ortakoy square; they lit the candles, and they sang the traditional Hanukkah song all together. Turkish Prime Minister celebrated the jewish religious holiday.

Hanukkah is a religious holiday in jewish culture. At this time of the year every jewish family lights the candles of the hanukkah at their own houses. Every single country lights the candles of the Hanukkah usually in their main squares. For example; in New York they light it in Times Square, and in London they light it in Trafalgar Square. Up until now every country did the same celebration except Turkey and it is all changed today. There are 9 candles and every day they light one more candles in this time of the year. Hanukkah resembles the never ending hope and light..

Wendy the bully whippet

Wendy is a purebred whippet that has a genetic mutation that causes double muscle; in fact the mutation is so rare that only one dog breed has it is the whippets.

She is twice the size of a normal whippet and almost 3 times bigger than a non-racing whippet. She looks like the strongest dog in the world.

Wendy lives in a house with 3 dogs and her owner. This unique condition affects her life in a bad way. Because of her extreme muscles it affects her bones and she can not run like normal dogs, her owner tries to make her life as normal as possible.

The dog that has an allergy towards humans

A dog in Indianapolis has a very unique condition. He is allergic to people.

This dog is a black Labrador. He was living at the Lucky Dog Retreat Rescue.

Robin Herman who works at the Lucky Dog Retreat Rescue says that when they first got him he was in a terrible condition

Even though they fed him the best food and they took really good care of him they still couldn’t understand that what was wrong with him.

So they took him for a blood test and the results was shocking. Humans. The dog was allergic to humans just like humans can be allergic to dogs; but Herman and her staff didn’t give up.

They give him serums and medical treatment and finally after a year he was totally fine. Now he is living happily with his owner .

April 15

So far…yesterday you visited a vet in Istanbul and interviewed him.  It was a good experience yet you seem to think it was not so helpful.  This is ok.  Take what you can from the experience and move on. 🙂  Mori, spend time over Spring Break trying to visit a dog shelter and see if they can take a group of IICS students who might be happy to help them.  This would be a good connection to make.

April 7

So far:

Identified issue as treatment of animals.  Your passion is dogs in particular.

Questions you created to guide:

In your notebook you have a lot of various questions which is great.  However, you need to focus on 3-4 this week.

You chose to focus on:

1)  Are attitudes towards animals changing over time?

2)  What are some ways that animals are mistreated ?

3) What rights should animals have?  Are these rights different from country to country?  Are they worldwide?

This week:

1) make a meeting time with your Mom this week to explain what you are doing, show your questions, show her some resources etc.  Maybe she can help? Maybe she knows people who can help you?  Or maybe she has connections with places you can visit?

2)  your mentor, Ms. St. George is away on class trip this week so please email her today and ask her:

– Do you have any connections with animals  shelters and  animal rights organizations that maybe you could interview? or visit?

–  explain your research questions to her so she can help.

3)  talk to your vet and maybe have an interview with him?  If you have an interview, please check the class site and click on the link called “Creating Interview Questions” You also have a copy in your notebook.
